Megabus — 48-Hour App Store Rescue

Mega Bus operates large-scale coach and transport services across multiple regions globally, with their mobile app acting as an increasingly important customer touchpoint for ticket access, journey management and bookings.

The {Challenge}

When they came to us, they were facing a hard deadline from Google. Their app had been flagged for using outdated and unsupported software libraries, and Google had issued a removal warning through the Play Store. If the application was not updated within the required timeframe, it would be removed from distribution entirely.

Their mobile app was a core operational channel, used by customers actively travelling and booking services daily. Removal from the app store would have disrupted customer access, damaged confidence in the platform and introduced immediate commercial risks by reducing revenue.

Mega Bus had 48 hours before enforcement action would begin, and they did not have the in-house mobile expertise required to diagnose, rebuild and resubmit the app quickly enough themselves. They needed a specialist team who could step in immediately, understand the risks fast and stabilise the situation without disruption.

The <Solution/>

This type of situation is exactly why we created our Application Defibrillator service. Application Defibrillator is designed specifically for high-pressure scenarios where apps are facing operational or compliance risk and businesses need rapid intervention from experienced mobile specialists. With this service, we were able to move immediately into diagnostic mode.

First, we performed a full technical audit of the application to isolate the unsupported libraries and identify the most critical compliance issues. From there, we updated and replaced the affected dependencies, rebuilt the application around the latest Google Play Store requirements and validated the platform to ensure stability had not been compromised in the process.

Because these types of emergency projects often involve incomplete visibility and compressed timelines, clear communication became just as important as technical execution. Throughout the engagement, we worked closely with the Mega Bus team to provide transparency around what had failed, what was being updated, what risks remained and how close the app was to successful resubmission.

Once the rebuild was complete, we resubmitted the application to Google Play and secured approval before the enforcement deadline was reached. The entire process, from diagnosis to live approval, was completed in just 48 hours.

The :[Results]

The app remained live, fully functional and compliant with Google Play Store requirements before the removal deadline took effect. Customers experienced no visible disruption, and Mega Bus retained continuity across one of its most important customer channels.

Projects like this also highlight a wider issue we regularly see across mature mobile products. App store compliance risks arrive suddenly to app owners, but that's only because the smaller areas haven't been continuously vetted. Typically, technical debt accumulates in the background over time - only becoming visible when platform owners like Apple or Google tighten requirements and force action under aggressive timelines.

The {Why}

Your app may not visibly break everyday, but the mobile ecosystem is constantly evolving beneath it. This is why ongoing mobile maintenance matters.
